Francisco Martin (age 19) a pre-law student from San Francisco, California sang Alaska by Maggie Rogers during his audition on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan tried to calm Martin’s nerves before his audition. Luke Bryan even took his pulse rate and said they might need an EMT the way Martin’s pulse is racing. Bryan said Martin’s pulse rate is at 148, which is what Bryan’s pulse rate is when he’s cycling.
Francisco Martin then gave an emotional rendition of “Alaska”, which surprised the American idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel and Luke. Both Luke and Lionel thought that they were set up by Martin because of his great performance despite his nervous demeanor.
Martin got his ticket to Hollywood, with the judges thinking he may be in the Top 10, if not the Top 5 of American Idol 2020.
Prior to his audition, Francisco Martin said he loves music but he always has to struggle with self-confidence.
But he passed his audition with flying colors despite his nerves. After his performance, the judges couldn’t believe it. Luke Bryan commented, “You little devil you,” and later said, “I just checked the pulse of a future superstar.”
Lionel Richie commented, “Sneaky, sneaky. What a great trick you just did.” He later said, “I loved the way you set us up. I’m a little afraid, I’m a little timid, I’m not quite sure…POWWW! Ok!”
Katy Perry commented, “You’ve got an incredible voice. I don’t know if you write your own songs. (Martin said he did). Excited to hear that.” Katy said she’d like to hear 30 seconds of one.
Martin said his song is about his Australian friend named Tyra who visited over the summer.
After listening to a snippet of Martin’s song, Katy commented, “She doesn’t sound like a friend.” But Martin assured her and the other judges “She’s a friend”.
Lionel Richie wound up his assessment of Martin and said,”Listen, I’m so happy to see you. Sweat, hypertension and everything, I don’t know what you’ve got. Whatever it is, it’s a talent.”
Luke asked Martin if he’s in college. When he confirmed, Luke said, “Drop out.” Lionel Richie advised him, “You pursue this, Law is your fallback.”
Katy then said, “Would you faint if I told you, that you are Top 10?” At that, Francisco Martin almost cried. Lionel and Luke said they think Martin is Top 5. Luke Bryan also showed him a sign with “Winner” written on it.
When judges Katy, Lionel, and Luke said that he’s going to Hollywood, Francisco wiped his tears and nervously shook the hands of the judges when he got his ticket.
Katy Perry said she knows Martin is nervous but they have to figure it out with what’s about to come. Luke Bryan jokingly said they have to recommend a no-caffeine diet for Martin.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
