Dare Me is an American drama TV series based on Megan Abbott’s acclaimed novel of the same name. The series was picked up in late January 2019 and premiered on December 29, 2019. Megan Abbott serves as writer and executive producer along with Gina Fattore (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Californication”). Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) and Michael Lombardo of Film 44, Sarah Condon and Karen Rosenfelt executive produce. Netflix will co-produce and have first-run rights to the series outside of the U.S.
The series is follows the lives of competitive high school cheerleaders in “a small Midwestern town”. It looks behind the all-American facade and dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It is also a fearless exploration of teen angst, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power.
Dare Me follows the relationship between two best friends (Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly) after a new coach (Willa Fitzgerald) arrives to bring their team to prominence. While the girls’ friendship is put to the test, their young lives are changed forever when a shocking crime rocks their quiet suburban world.
This new TV series is part coming-of-age story, part small-town drama, and part murder mystery. It exposes the physical and psychological extremes that some young women are willing to endure in order to get ahead.
Willa Fitzgerald (age 28) plays the role of Coach Colette French, Sutton Grove High School’s new cheerleading coach. Fitzgerald is an American actress best known for her lead role as Emma Duval in MTV’s Scream. Her other notable roles include Amazon Studios’ political web series Alpha House and USA Network’s drama series Royal Pains.
Herizen F. Guardiola (age 23) takes on the role of Addy Hanlon, a yearning, ambitious high school student who dreams of using cheer to secure a college scholarship and a ticket out of her Midwestern town. Guardiola is an American singer, songwriter, and actress known for her breakout role as Mylene Cruz on the Netflix original series, The Get Down. She has also been featured on numerous musical projects, including Absofacto’s “ThousandPeaces” EP, the soundtrack for The Get Down, and the official soundtrack for the Major Lazer documentary “Give Me Future.” By October of 2018, she released her first EP, Come Over To My House and most recently in April of 2019, released her latest single, “Focus.”
Marlo Kelly is Beth Cassidy, Addy’s best friend in Dare Me. Kelly is an Australian actress who played Skye Peters in 2015 to 2016 on Australia’s long-running soap opera, Home and Away. She is also known for playing the title role in the horror TV series Patricia Moore (2018).
British actor Rob Heaps portrays Matt French, Colette’s husband and a project manager at Eagle Investments who is working on Sutton Grove High School’s new stadium. Heaps is best known for co-starring as Ezra Bloom in the Bravo TV series Imposters. He grew up in York, England and went to drama school in St. Petersburg, Russia.
