Hawaii Five-0 is an American action police procedural TV series that premiered on September 20, 2010, on the network CBS. The series is a re-imagining of the original series, which aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980.
Like the original series, the show follows an elite state police task force set up to fight major crimes in the state of Hawaii. The task force answers only to the Governor of the state of Hawaii and is given full immunity and means. The task force has no restrictions and is always backed by the Governor. The team is able to investigate crimes ranging from terrorism to kidnapping as well as murder and robberies.
The elite task force is led by Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin), a Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander who is assisted by Detective Danny Williams (Scott Caan), and other police officers. The show has had three crossovers with other crime shows and has received praise for its modern take on the original series. On April 18, 2018, CBS renewed the series for a ninth season which premiered on September 28, 2018. The series was also renewed by CBS for a tenth season on May 9, 2019, which premiered on September 27, 2019.
McGarrett chooses Honolulu PD Detective-Sergeant Danny “Danno” Williams as his partner and unofficial second in command of the team. He initially fills out the team by selecting HPD lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim up to Season 7) and Chin’s cousin, Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park up to Season 7), a rookie HPD officer. DHS Special Agent Lori Weston (guest Lauren German) is also assigned to the team later on, although she is later forced to return to the DHS by the Governor. They are assisted by Dr. Max Bergman (Masi Oka), a medical examiner for the County of Honolulu, and Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia), Chin’s high school classmate and a conspiracy theorist.
Steve later adds Lou Grover (Chi McBride), a HPD SWAT commander, and for a brief time, Catherine Rollins (Michelle Borth), Steve’s girlfriend and a former USNR lieutenant. Following Max, Chin, and Kono’s departures, McGarrett fills in their spots with Tani Rey (Meaghan Rath) and Junior Reigns (Beulah Koale), a former Navy SEAL-turned-Police Candidate. Kono’s husband Adam Noshimuri (Ian Anthony Dale) joins the task force following the couple’s divorce, and shortly after Jerry’s departure, CID Sergeant Quinn Liu (Katrina Law) is recruited in his place. The team is now assisted by medical examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha (Kimee Balmilero), confidential informant Kamekona Tupuola (Taylor Wily), and HPD liaison Sergeant Duke Lukela (Dennis Chun).
Australian actor, writer, director, and producer Alex O’Loughlin plays the role of Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on the remake of Hawaii Five-0. O’Loughlin enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney in 1999 and graduated in June 2002 after completing a three-year, full-time Bachelor of Dramatic Art program. His film credits include starring roles in Oyster Farmer (2004) and The Back-up Plan (2010). He also appeared on the TV series Moonlight (2008) and Three Rivers (2009).
