Franklin Boone (age 27), a music teacher at the School of Rock in Durham, North Carolina sang an amazing cover of “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac during the Auditions round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Dreams” is a song on Fleetwood Mac’s eleventh studio album Rumours (1977). The song reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies.
Franklin was handed a Golden Ticket to Hollywood after all of the American Idol judges voted “Yes” for him. Luke Bryan said he sees a recording artist in Franklin while Katy Perry said he has a big chance of winning American Idol. Lionel Richie said Franklin has style in his vocals, looks and attitude.
Franklin said he teaches kids as young as six up to those in high school.
Luke Bryan commented, “Way to be that first note kind of singer. I mean the first note you hit told me a big old story about you. I just see recording artist. There’s so much artistry in you.”
Katy Perry said Franklin’s students must have dreams of becoming band memmbers, on the road, touring, of becoming artists. “So they’re following their dreams. And you’re following your dreams. I think it would be an absolute shame if you couldn’t live by example. If you want to win this thing, I think you have a really good chance to.”
Lionel Richie commented, “There’s a word that makes an artist an artist, that’s called style. You brought your style. Vocally and your look, and your attitude all in one package. It’s gonna ba a yes for me and I’ll look for the next frontier for you.”
Katy Perry said, “I appreciate your humility but it’s time to shine.” Luke and Katy also voted Yes for Franklin to get a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
As Franklin left, Luke Bryan said that Franklin gave him that “Alejandro moment”.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
