Jovin Webb (age 28), a musician from Louisiana, performed “You Are the Best Thing” by American folk singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne during the Top 40 Hawaii Showcase on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“You Are the Best Thing” is the lead single of Ray LaMontagne’s album “Gossip in the Grain” released in August 2008. The song peaked at number 5 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative chart and at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Jovin said he just wants the judges to see that he’s made for this. “I’m 29 years old now, and it’s definitely my last chance. And that Top 20, I want that better than I’ve wanted anything in my life,” he said.
American Idol judges praised Jovin’s sound and artistry. Lionel Richie said Jovin did not hit all the notes but has a sound that will work for him in the business. Luke Bryan said Jovin does not have a big range but his artistry is spot on. In the end, Lionel Richie told a very tense Jovin that he is one of the Top 20 for American Idol 2020.

Judges Comments:
Lionel Richie said that Jovin did not hit all the notes during his performance. “But for us, you have a sound that will work for you in this business.”
Luke Bryan commented, “You have a lot of signature artists’ qualities. You don’t have this big, big range but your artistry and what you’re doin’ is spot on. Now, you’re gonna have to build on it and work on it every day of your life.”
Lionel added, “Now, there comes a time when we have to narrow this thing down, my friend. And the toughest part about this is, you’re in our Top 20.”
Jovin, who looked so tense as Lionel spoke, touched the floor with both hands and then held his head. He said, “Oh my God, why did you do that?”
Katy Perry said, “The toughest part is that you just took a spot, bro.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
