Kimmy Gabriela, (age 17) a high school student from Florida, sang “I’m Here” during the Hollywood Week – Solos round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
After an impressive audition wherein American Idol judges gauged that Kimmy is Top Ten material, she felt her Duets performance wasn’t up to par. Kimmy hoped to redeem herself in the Solos round, with a powerful song by the lead character Celie in the Broadway musical The Color Purple, which is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name.
Kimmy’s performance impressed Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Katy even gave her a standing ovation and said it was a cool song choice.
After her rendition, Kimmy felt she has redeemed herself and was ecstatic that Katy stood up for her. She felt like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders.
Inside the venue, Katy commented, “Listen, I want to figure out who she is an artist. But she’s Top 10.” Luke Bryan said “She’s good,” and Lionel agreed.

American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
