Military Man Samuel Wilco (age 39) currently stationed at Fort Knox, Kentuckhy, sang an amazing cover of “Lately” by American singer Stevie Wonder during the Blind Auditions of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“Lately” was included in Stevie Wonder’s album Hotter than July (1980). The song peaked at number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was covered by R&B group Jodeci and released as a promotional single for the live album Uptown MTV Unplugged in June 1993. Jodeci’s version peaked at number 4 of the US Billboard Hot 100.
Coach Kelly Clarkson turned her chair for Samuel Wilco, followed by Nick Jonas.
Kelly said she loves Samuel’s voice and his smart song choice. Nick said Sam’s performance was unbelievable and said they could do amazing things together with the song selection he’s planning for his team.
Eventually, Samuel Wilco picked Nick Jonas to be his coach because he said his kids are fans of Nick.

Kelly said if she ever auditioned for The Voice, “Lately” would be her audition song because she loves its message. She said it’s a smart song to pick because it enables a singer to show the different qualities of one’s voice. She told Sam this indicates he’s “probably really rad with song selection, which means you’re gonna fare really well in this setting.” Kelly said she loves Sam’s voice and even sang the entire song with him while he was performing. “I felt the connection right off the bat, and I had to turn around, and I had to have you on my team.”
Nick said Samuel’s performance was unbelievable and thanked him for his service. He said a voice like Samuel’s is needed in the competition and “it kind of made me a little jealous and upset, actually, that I can’t do that.” He said he would be excited to work on a song selection for Samuel that would wow everyone. “You blew me away. I think that we could do amazing things together. And I really believe in you and I feel like you got a lot of heart.”
John Legend said that Samuel will do a fantastic job on The Voice and welcomed him to the show.
After sharing a funny anecdote about his brother who was once based in Fort Knox, Blake Shelton said he thought Samuel did great. “You’re more than ready for this moment. That’s a heck of a journey. And for whatever reason it led you to this moment, we’re proud to have you on the show.”
