Julia Gargano (age 21) a songwriter and college student from New York performed “Glitter in the Air” by Pink during the Top 40 Hawaii Showcase round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“Glitter in the Air” is the sixth single from Pink’s fifth studio album, Funhouse, released in 2010 only in North America. The song peaked at number 8 on Billboard’s US Adult Top 40 and at number 18 on US Billboard Hot 100.
American Idol judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie loved Julia’s performance and picked her to be part of this season’s Top 20.
Luke Bryan said Julia is a great singer and said all she needs is a hit song and she will be in the Grammys. He also thinks Julia could go all the way and could be a frontrunner in the competition.

For Julia, getting to the Top 40 of American Idol is unreal. Before facing the judges for the final judgment, she said she was proud of the performance she put on no matter what happens. “Either the judges are gonna give me some really good advice to get better, or I go through.”
Julia told the judges that her performance the night before was a freeing experience. She loved every second of it and was really grateful to have that opportunity.
Judges Comments:
Luke Bryan said, “It was really great seeing you step away from the piano. Like, all we need to do is this girl needs a hit song and… she’ll be on the Grammys.”
Asked how her voice was during the performance, Julia admitted it was definitely a litte scratchy, a little rough.”
Katy Perry commented, “I heard the hoarseness towards the end. What happened?”
Julia replied that she still has to learn how to wrangle her nerves in and not let it ruin technique.
Luke continued, “Well I think you need to remember that you’re a great singer. Sing it a couple of times. And be confident knowing that you’re going to deliver a great performance. So, we still feel like you can go a long, long way. Maybe all the way? You are definitely in our Top 20. And definitely becoming a frontrunner. Push yourself every time. It’s America’s choice now.”
Katy commented, “I loved seeing you blossom,” while Lionel Richie said, “Last night you were just in a glow.”
Julia almost cried when she heard she’s part of Top 20. “I am over the moon. I’m just so proud. And I just can’t wait to keep doing this. I just can’t believe it.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
