Genius is a 2016 British-American biographical drama film directed by Michael Grandage and written by John Logan, based on the 1978 National Book Award-winner “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius” by A. Scott Berg. The film features a powerhouse cast including Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney, Dominic West, Guy Pearce, and Vanessa Kirby. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.

Genius is a touching story about novelist Thomas Wolfe, and a successful Scribner’s editor named Maxwell Perkins, who is known for discovering talented authors such as Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Perkins first meets Wolfe as he comes across the latter’s massive manuscript of “O Lost” and finds it worthy of publication. He collaborates with Wolfe on the book and it was published as Wolfe’s first book “Look Homeward, Angel.” It was a commercial success. Perkins and Wolfe become best friends, while Wolfe’s relationship with Aline Bernstein, is severely tested after the publication of Wolfe’s novel.
The film had its premiere at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2016, where it was nominated for Best First Feature Award and for Golden Berlin Bear. Genius was released in the USA on June 10, 2016.
On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a rating of 53% based on 109 reviews while on Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 56 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.
