Set in 1840s England, Ammonite tells the story of acclaimed self-taught palaeontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), who works alone on the wild and brutal Southern English coastline of Lyme Regis. A tourist named Roderick Murchison (James McArdle) makes a generous offer for Mary to take care of his young wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan), who is recuperating from a personal tragedy. Because of her financial difficulties, Mary cannot afford to turn him down.
Coming from two very different worlds, Mary and Charlotte often clashed. Yet despite their differences, they develop a passionate relationship, an intense and all-consuming love affair that will alter both of their lives forever.
Ammonite is a romantic drama film written and directed by British filmmaker Francis Lee (God’s Own Country). It is inspired by the life of British paleontologist Mary Anning and centers on her romantic relationship with Charlotte Murchison.

Ammonite is produced by Iain Canning, Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and Emile Sherman with See-Saw Films, BBC Films and the British Film Institute. The film was set to world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2020. On July 16, 2020 it was announced that Kate Winslet would be awarded the 2020 festival’s Tribute Actor Award.
In February 2019, Lionsgate and Transmission Films acquired UK and Australian distribution rights to Ammonite, respectively. In January 2020, Neon acquired US distribution rights to the film. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 13, 2020.
