Lovecraft Country is a drama horror TV series developed by Misha Green, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. The series is produced by Monkeypaw Productions, Bad Robot Productions, and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers including Jordan Peele, Misha Green, J. J. Abrams, Ben Stephenson and Daniel Sackheim. Yann Demange executive produced and directed the pilot episode.
The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
American actress and three-time NAACP Image Awards recipient Jurnee Smollett (age 33) plays the role of Letitia “Leti” Lewis in the series. Smollett began as a child actress on television sitcoms On Our Own (1994-1995) and Full House (1992-1994). She received critical acclaim and Critic’s Choice Award for her role as Eve in the 1997 film Eve’s Bayou. Her film credits include The Great Debaters (2007) and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013). She also starred several TV series, including Friday Night Lights (2009-2011), HBO vampire drama True Blood (2013-2014), and Underground. In 2018, Smollett was cast as superheroine Black Canary in the DC Extended Universe, making her first appearance in Birds of Prey.
