The fourteenth series of Britain’s Got Talent, a British talent competition series, began broadcasting in the UK from 11 April 2020. This series is most notable for being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which split the series into two parts, both in production and broadcast schedule. The first half aired audition episodes between April-May, which had been filmed before the government invoked a national lockdown, and the second half is currently airing the remaining episodes across September-October. Prior to production beginning, the programme’s sister show was effectively cancelled following the previous series, and replaced by a new online spin-off featuring auditions not aired in the main programme.
Production on the second half of the series saw considerable changes to the format of the remaining stages, in order to provide a safe working environment for staff, hosts, judges and participants, including a change in the voting system, all episodes being aired weekly – a first in the programme’s history – and all semi-finals being pre-recorded. Before the first semi-final was to be filmed, Simon Cowell sustained an injury following an accident in August, forcing him to be absent for the rest of the series and leading to him being replaced by Ashley Banjo as a stand-in.
