The Moth was unmasked during the The Group B Playoffs on The Masked Dancer Season 1 on January 13, 2021.
Before the reveal, the Moth peformed to “Sway” by Michael Buble. The Moth got the least amount of votes when she was pitted against Zebra, Cotton Candy, and Sloth, and failed to advance to the Super Six. Startattle.com – The Masked Dancer.
Brian Austin Green was the only panelist who was able to guess the celebrity behind the Moth mask.
So who is Moth on The Masked Dancer?
The Moth was revealed as American child safety activist and commentator for ABC News, Elizabeth Smart.
Prior to the unmasking, Moth answered the questions from the panelists.
The Moth told Brian Austin Green that her friends would describe her as kind, genuine and caring. She replied to guest panelist Cheryl Hines that she is taller than Ken Jeong. She told Paula Abdul she does not have brown hair and confirmed to Ashley Tisdale that she plays musical instruments. In reply to Ken Jeong’s question, she said that she has been on stage in front of thousands of people.
Brian Austin Green said that based on the clue showing the White House, he described his guess as “the ultimate survivor” who has met with the presidents, stood in front of Congress and tried to change protection laws for children. He said he’s sticking with his earlier guess that Moth is Elizabeth Smart.
Ashley Tisdale thought earlier that Moth was Megyn Kelly. She now thinks that Moth is an artist, a singer who plays musical instrument, probably guitar, and is blonde. She guessed that Moth is American singer-songwriter, actress, and author Jewel.
Guest panelist Cheryl Hines said the celebrity behind the Moth mask is someone who made headline news with DC and the president. Noticing the dates on the line, she thinks it’s Megyn Kelly, who was on Dateline.
Ken Jeong thinks Moth is married to Josh Kushner and making headlines. So he thinks it’s super model Karlie Kloss.
Paula Abdul noted that Moth is not a trained dancer but felt into the choreography nicely. She said it maybe somebody who had a major scandal with the President, so she thinks Moth is American comedian and actress Kathy Griffin.

Elizabeth Smart said being the Moth was so much fun and such a different experience. When asked why she decided to join The Masked Dancer, she became emotional. Fighting back tears, she said “My grandma actually passed away very recently. But she was so much fun, she never let a moment pass her by. And so when this opportunity came along, I thought, I live a pretty serious life and I’m going to take this opportunity and just have fun.”
Clues about the Moth were explained after the reveal. The newspaper with a lizard and the word “smart” was a nod to Elizabeth’s name. The dates on a line were a clue to her appearance on Dateline. Asked what the number 286 stands for, Elizabeth said she testified on behalf of the child safety bill 286.
Brian praised Elizabeth just after the reveal. He said, “For what you’ve dealt with in your life, you have been an inspiration for so many people and you’ve done so much good with a really difficult situation, and we need more people like you on the planet.”
Elizabeth Smart (age 33) first gained national attention at age 14 when she was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City by Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was held captive for nine months until she was rescued by police officers on a street in Sandy, Utah, 18 miles from her home. Her life and abduction have been the subject of several films and non-fiction books.
Smart has gone on to work as an activist and advocate for missing persons. In 2011, she went on to found the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which works to promote awareness about abductions and which has actively joined the fight against sexual violence since its inception. In the same year, ABC News announced that Smart would work as a commentator for them, mainly focusing on missing persons. In October 2013, a memoir of her experience titled “My Story,” which she co-wrote with Chris Stewart, was published. She also published Where There’s Hope: Healing, Moving Forward, and Never Giving Up in 2018. Smart has been a correspondent for the true-crime show Crime Watch Daily since September 2016.
The Masked Dancer is an American reality competition television series that premiered on Fox on December 27, 2020. Craig Robinson hosts the show, with Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, and Ashley Tisdale serving as panelists. Like The Masked Singer’s format, celebrity contestants wear head-to-toe costumes and face masks that conceal their identities, but perform alongside a “masked partner”. The show began as a recurring segment on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show which spoofed The Masked Singer.
