Donna: Stronger Than Pretty spans three decades in the life of Donna, who tries to live up to the traditions and expectations of her Italian roots and of the “American Dream”. That dream becomes a living nightmare when she becomes a victim of domestic violence.
Jaret Martino’s mother Donna, was the inspiration behind the film. Martino dedicated the movie to his mother. He said the film was realized to be used as “a tool to inspire and empower other families to try to break free of negative conditioning, stereotypes, patterns, and cycles.” Martino said the movie “honors the strength of women all over the world and hopefully it will also encourage men to acknowledge and share their emotions with the women and children who love them.”
Donna: Stronger Than Pretty was produced by Kate Amundsen, Alyssa Jayson, and Andrew Vass. It will be released by Gravitas Ventures on VOD starting February 23, 2021.
Donna: Stronger Than Pretty is a multi-awarded film, with 13 wins and 9 nominations so far. The film won the Accolade Global Film Competition Award of Merit: Liberation / Social Justice / Protest and Award of Merit Special Mention – Feature Film at the Accolade Competition 2020. It also won the CIFF Award for Best Feature Film at the Chandler International Film Festival and the Festival Award for Best Supporting Actress and Festival Award – Special Mention at the Chelsea Film Festival. The film won four awards at the Cinema at the Edge Independent Film Festival including Audience Award for Best Feature Film, Festival Award for Best Feature Film, Jury Award for Best Director and for Best Actress (Kate Amundsen). At the Queen Palm International Film Festival, the film won the Second Quarter Technical & Performance Award for Best Director (Martino) and Best Actress (Amundsen) and the Silver Award for Best Feature Film – Drama. The film also won the Diamond Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Pinnacle Film Awards.
