The Cotton Candy was voted as the winner of The Masked Dancer Season 1 (2021) and was later unmasked during the Finale on Week 8 (February 17) of the reality competition TV series. Before the reveal, Cotton Candy danced to “This Is Me” by Kesha. Her amazing performance wowed the audience and the panelists.
Some fans of The Masked Dancer knew who Cotton Candy was prior to her unmasking. Among the panelists, only Paula Abdul was able to correctly guess the celebrity behind the Cotton Candy mask.
So who is Cotton Candy on The Masked Dancer?
The Cotton Candy was revealed as American former artistic gymnast Gabby Douglas, the first African American to become the Olympic individual all-around champion, and the first U.S. gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics.
Prior to her unmasking, the first ever winner of The Masked Dancer was asked what it was like being Cotton Candy. She said that it was such an amazing journey, and she soon became emotional and started to cry.
Host Craig Robinson then asked the panelists for their final guesses as to who Cotton Candy is.
Brian Austin Green said the ice skating and gold watch clues made him think of American former figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. But the many lip clues and the rain falling in the clues led him to conclude that Cotton Candy is someone whose gold medal routine was the song “The Rainbow”. He believe that Cotton Candy is American former competitive figure skater, actress and sports commentator Tara Lipinski.
Ken Jeong said Cotton Candy’s ability and the clue of English breakfast made him think at the start that she is American dancer, actress, singer and songwriter Julianne Hough, because she trained in the UK. But the word “foundation” in the clue made him think she was honored with the Billie Jean award from the Women’s Sports Foundation and the prayer hands clue refers to her most famous ice skating routine which is Dante’s Prayer. Ken Jeong thinks Cotton Candy is none other than retired American figure skater Michelle Kwan.
Paula Abdul said she started with her friend, American actress and dancer Jenna Dewan. She said the prayer hands clue points to Cotton Candy being deeply religious. The fire and the Olympic rings made her think that Alicia Keys and Cotton Candy performed on stage with a song dedicated to her called “Girl on Fire”. Paula was certain Cotton Candy is Gabby Douglas.
Ashley Tisdale said she thought for a long time that Cotton Candy is an ice skater and could be Tara Lipinski. But she changed her mind and thinks Cotton Candy’s a gymnast based on the way she handled her accidental fall in the very beginning. Ashley said Cotton Candy fell like a professional gymnast. She guessed that Cotton Candy could be American artistic gymnast Simone Biles, author of the book “Courage to Soar”, which Ashley heard in the clue package.

Gabby Douglas said being Cotton Candy was unlike anything she had ever done before. “It’s my job to make it look super light but I’ve never done anything like this before, I’ve never trained with the mask on. It was the first time performing and not being judged. I had so much fun and I’m so grateful and so honored,” she said.
Clues about the Cotton Candy were explained after the reveal. The lipstick was a nod to Gabby’s lipstick line. Cotton Candy holding a chocolate bar above her head was a clue to her book “Raising the Bar”. The subway sign labeled FS was a clue to the initials of Gabby’s nickname: Flying Squirrel. She said the clue showing dollar signs in her eyes points to her training in Ohio and that was for Buckeye. The English breakfast is a clue to where she won in 2012 – in London.
Gabby Douglas (age 25) is the 2012 Olympic all around champion and the 2015 World all-around silver medalist. She was a member of the gold-winning teams at both the 2012 and the 2016 Summer Olympics; and was also a member of the gold-winning American teams at the 2011 and the 2015 World Championships. An adaptation of her life story was the 2014 Lifetime biopic film, The Gabby Douglas Story. She also had her own reality TV series titled “Douglas Family Gold”.
