The nineteenth season of the reality show singing competition American Idol premiered on February 14, 2021 on the ABC television network. It is the fourth season to air on ABC since the series reboot; Ryan Seacrest returns as host. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie return as judges and Bobby Bones as mentor.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the show offered its first ever live virtual auditions to aspiring contestants through its Idol Across America program using custom-built Zoom technology. The remote auditions took place from August 10 to October 28, 2020 in 50 states plus Washington, D.C. as well as a number of open call auditions, and from these the producers selected the contestants who can then audition in front of the judges.
“Blinding Lights” was released in November 2019 as the second single from The Weeknd’s fourth studio album After Hours. The song peaked at number one in thirty-four countries, including the United States and Canada, where it became the Weeknd’s fifth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100 for four and seven weeks, respectively. It was the best-performing global single of 2020, with 2.72 billion subscription stream equivalents globally (21.7 million sales) according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Blinding Lights is The Weeknd’s most successful single worldwide to date and currently holds the record for most weeks spent in the top 5 and top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
