The twenty-third season of the American police procedural, legal drama television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit premiered on September 23, 2021. It is produced by Universal Television, in association with Wolf Entertainment. Dick Wolf is executive producer, along with Warren Leight, Julie Martin, Mariska Hargitay, Norberto Barba, Arthur Forney, and Peter Jankowski. The showrunner is Warren Leight.
Law & Order: SVU was created by Dick Wolf for NBC. The show premiered on September 20, 1999. It is the first spinoff of Law & Order and stars Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, the commanding officer of the Special Victims Unit in a fictionalized version of the New York City Police Department. The series delves into the dark side of the NYC underworld as the detectives investigate and prosecute various s—ally oriented c—es, all the while trying to balance the effects of the investigation on their own lives as they try not to let the dark side of these c—es affect them. Its stories also touch on the political and societal issues associated with gender identity, s—al preferences, and equality rights. The series often uses stories that are “ripped from the headlines” or based on real c—es that have received media attention.
In the current 23rd season, SVU will hit its 500th episode. The series has received 91 award nominations, winning 33 awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006 for Mariska Hargitay.
