Dolly Parton confirms “9 to 5” sequel to tackle modern workplace issues of women.
American singer-songwriter and actress Dolly Parton (age 73) revealed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that she, Lily Tomlin (age 79), and Jane Fonda (age 81) are signed on to do a sequel to 1980 American comedy film, “9 to 5”. The three are the original cast members of the said movie. It followed the story of three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with, and of overthrowing the company’s autocratic, “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss, played by Dabney Coleman (age 87).
The “9 to 5” movie was such a big hit at that time and had a domestic gross of over USD 103.9 million . It is now considered the 20th highest-grossing comedy film.
According to Dolly Parton, “We are. Yeah, after all these years, see, all the stuff going on now. ‘Cause we did a lot of good with the first movie but all the women still feel that we’re not getting equal pay for equal work and all that. So it’s just a good time with all the stuff going on with women.”
The original script writer of “9 to 5” had the idea to do another movie. And it’s the first time after nearly 40 years, it made sense to do another “9 to 5” movie again.
Dolly Parton said they’ve tried over and over to do the iconic movie again. She even kept on telling Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda that they better get after it, otherwise it would be called “95” instead of “9 to 5”. But they’re getting there and they’re so excited about the sequel, Dolly Parton added.
Dolly Parton Shares 9 to 5 Sequel Details
The purpose of the “9 to 5” sequel is to tackle modern workplace issues. Dolly Parton has been promoting that there will be a sequel, she’s just so excited about doing it. She says she’s not someone who wants to be part of something that’s not great, so she’s assuring everyone that the “9 to 5” sequel will be great.
Dolly Parton admitted that it took a while for her and the other cast members to come on board. For her, she didn’t like to do a sequel because the story that presented back then was not as good as the original movie. She did not like to mess with the legacy of “9 to 5” considering the huge number of “9 to 5” fans they still have up to now.
For Dolly Parton, “9 to 5” remained very popular because aside from it’s entertaining, it was really well done. There’s comedy but it also tackled an important issue in the workplace. Not only that, but since the #MeToo movement and women raising their voices to be heard and to fight for their rights, the “9 to 5” cast think this is the perfect time to bring the “9 to 5” sequel to the cinemas. “You know how some things just happen at the right time?”, Dolly Parton said.
