Regarded as a contemporary classic, “Groundhog Day is number 32 on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies” and #27 on the Writers Guild of America’s 101 Greatest Screenplays ever written. In 2000, readers of Total Film voted it the seventh greatest comedy film of all time and in 2011, Time Out London named it the 5th-greatest comedy film of all time.
The film grossed $70.9 million in North America and ranked 13th among films released in 1993. It was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, but lost to Jurassic Park.
