Another Filipino contestant, this time a 10-year-old Broadway hopeful named Eleana Gabunada, gets the Golden Buzzer on Asia’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 3).

Before she began her performance, Eleana introduced herself and said she wants to be “a performer and a Broadway singer”.

Eleana sang a cover of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” by Barbra Streisand from the Broadway musical “Funny Girl”. The judges and the audience were blown away by her rendition of a fairly difficult song.

Singer-songwriter Anggun shook her head in amazement, while record producer and composer David Foster clicked his fingers to the lively tempo of Eleana’s song, after exclaiming “Dang!”.

Most members of the audience gave Eleana a standing ovation after her flawless performance, and so did David Foster.

Judge Anggun said, “Oh my goodness! You’re like a Baby Streisand. That was a very difficult song! And you did it, you performed it super well.”

Korean American singer and rapper Jay Park agreed. He said, “Yeah, It was a really solid performance. I mean, you’re very, very talented.”

David Foster gave the most incisive comment. He said:

There’s a lot of people much older than you that could sing that song but they don’t understand the genre, they don’t know what they’re supposed to be doing.

But somehow at the age 10, you understand your mission and you understand your job. And there’s no doubt in my mind that if you want to be in Broadway one day, you will be.

When it was their time to vote, Anggun gave an excited ‘Yes’, while Jay Park said that since David Foster gave a standing ovation only to Eleana, he thinks that Eleana then deserves a Yes vote.

When it came to David, he stared at Eleana and then he proceeded to press the Golden Buzzer. Eleana was shocked and her mom emerged from backstage to hug her.

Onstage, David said. “Nice job, baby. I want to hear more from you, okay? You’re really great. You really delivered. Don’t let me down. Practise, okay?”

Eleana looked up to David and muttered “Thank You”.

Backstage, hosts Alan Wong and Justin Bratton told Eleana Gabunada that she’ll be going straight to the semifinals, bringing her one step closer to the Grand Finals and giving her a shot at winning the grand prize of $100,000.

Eleana Gabunada is a former contestant of ABS-CBN’s “The Voice Kids”, as a team member of internationally-acclaimed singer and actress Lea Salonga. She was also a contestant on the amateaur singing competition “Tawag ng Tanghalan” in 2017.

The young singer is the second Filipino act to have received a Golden Buzzer in Asia’s Got Talent 2019. Hand shadow performer (or shadowgrapher) Shadow Ace also got the Golden Buzzer for his performance from hosts Alan Wong and Justin Bratton.

As for David Foster, it’s the second time that he pressed the Golden Buzzer for a Filipino contestant. In Season 1 of Asia’s Got Talent (2015), David Foster gave the Golden Buzzer to soprano singer Gerphil Flores, who ended up on third place in the competition and later joined the “David Foster and Friends Asian Tour” for 2015-16.
