The Aeronauts is a biographical adventure film written and directed by Tom Harper, from a story co-written with Jack Thorne.

The epic balloon flight depicted in The Aeronauts is based on the September 5, 1862 flight of British aeronauts James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell, whose hot air balloon broke the world flight altitude record at the time by reaching about 11,887 m (38,999 ft). Glaisher’s character appears in the film but Coxwell has been replaced by Amelia Wren, a fictional character.
Amelia Wren’s character is an amalgam of three pioneering women, namely professional balloonist and aeronaut Sophie Blanchard, British aeronaut Margaret Graham, and American aviator Amelia Earhart.
