Young violinist and cancer survivor Tyler Butler-Figueroa (age 12) performed a raw version of “Hallelujah” during the finals of America’s Got Talent: The Champions (Season 2), aka AGT Champions 2020.
“Hallelujah” is a song written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen. It was originally released on his album Various Positions (1984) with little success. But it gained recognition after being featured in the animated film Shrek (2001). Many arrangements have been performed in recordings and in concert since then, with over 300 versions known. The song has been used in film and TV soundtracks and televised talent contests. “Hallelujah” also experienced renewed interest following Cohen’s death in November 2016 and appeared on many international singles charts, including entering the American Billboard Hot 100 for the first time.
Tyler’s solo of “Hallelujah” got a standing ovation from AGT judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Alesha Dixon and Howie Mandel.
The winner of AGT Champions 2020 will be announced on The Champions Results Finale which will be aired on February 17, 2020.
Got Talent history: (America’s Got Talent) AGT: S14 – Finalist
Simon Cowell said Tyler’s performance was so impressive because he decided to do “one of the most iconic songs of all time, stripped back, no gimmicks” and without anyone with him on stage. He said it made Tyler vulnerable and endearing. Simon said he gets that weird feeling that Tyler might just have given himself a shot at winning the competition.
Heidi Klum said that amidst all the craziness they’ve seen in the finals – the singer, dancers, aerialists, Hans with his sparkles and glitters – Tyler holds his own on the stage. She said, “I have to give it to you. Well done. It was beautiful.”
Alesha Dixon said Tyler just warms her heart. She said that with Tyler and his beautiful instrument with a perfect song, he just made the superfans’ job very difficult. “Another stellar performance, well done,” Alesha concluded.
Tyler Butler Figueroa is Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer recipient in Season 14 of “America’s Got Talent.” He touched the hearts and inspired millions of people around the world because of his amazing story. At four years old, Tyler was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Looking for a way to express himself after being bullied for his hair loss, Tyler started playing the violin. Inspired by violinist Brian King Joseph from Season 13 of AGT, he started street performing and playing at local events to pay for travel expenses to audition for the show. Tyler is now cancer-free and has been in remission for four years.
America’s Got Talent: The Champions (abbreviated as AGT: The Champions or simply AGTC) is a spin-off of America’s Got Talent (aka AGT), a televised American talent show competition, created by Simon Cowell. The program is produced by Fremantle for the NBC television network, and first premiered on January 7, 2019. The spin-off is hosted by Terry Crews, joined by a panel of judges. At present, the panel consist of America’s Got Talent judges, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel, with Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon joining for the second season.
