The development for the film goes way back July 2014, when it was announced that Elle Fanning would star in All the Bright Places, an adaptation of a book to be penned by author Jennifer Niven. In July 2015, it was announced that Miguel Arteta would be directing the film. It took three years, before Justice Smith joined the cast of the film in July 2018. At the same time, it was reported that Brett Haley would be replacing Arteta as director, and Liz Hannah co-writing the script with Niven.

Fanning, Paula Mazur, Mitchell Kaplan, Doug Mankoff, Andrew Spaulding and Brittany Kahn serve as producers, while Liz Hannah will serve as an executive producer.

In October 2018, Alexandra Shipp, Keegan-Michael Key, Luke Wilson, Kelli O’Hara, Virginia Gardner, Felix Mallard, Lamar Johnson and Sofia Hasmik joined the cast of the film, with Netflix distributing. Principal photography began on October 4, 2018, in Cleveland, Ohio.

American actress, model, and singer Elle Fanning (age 21) portrays the female lead named Violet Markey. Fanning is best known for her recent works in independent films, and her portrayal as Aurora in the Maleficent film series. She made her film debut as the younger version of her sister Dakota Fanning’s character in the drama film I Am Sam (2001). Her breakthrough came in 2011 with her starring role in the science-fiction film Super 8, which earned her a Spotlight Award at the Hollywood Film Festival.

Fanning’s film credits include Babel (2006), We Bought a Zoo (2011), Ginger & Rosa (2012), Maleficent (2014) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019). She has made a transition into independent cinema in recent years and starred in films such as 3 Generations (2015), 20th Century Women (2016), Mary Shelley (2017), The Beguiled (2017), I Think We’re Alone Now (2018), Galveston (2018), and Teen Spirit (2018).

American actor Justice Smith (age 24) stars as Theodore Finch. Smith is best known for his role as Franklin Webb in the 2018 science fiction film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. He also stars in the 2019 film Detective Pikachu.

Smith appeared in several TV series including The Thundermans (2014), The Get Down (2016), and Drunk History (2019). His portrayal of Ezekiel “Zeke” Figuero in The Get Down is considered as his break out role. His film credits also include Paper Towns (2015), Everyday (2016), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018). Smith will also star in the upcoming films Jurassic World 3 (2021) and The Voyeurs (TBA).
