Gigi Hess (age 22) from New Mexico and Micah Iverson from Tokyo, Japan of Team Kelly Clarkson performed “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi during The Battles round on The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“Someone You Loved” is the third single from the second extended play, Breach (2018) of Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi. In the United States, the song was a sleeper hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 in its 24th week on the chart. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 62nd Grammy Awards and also received an award for Song of the Year at the 2020 BRIT Awards.
Blake Shelton picked Gigi as the winner of the battle, while John Legend and Nick Jonas chose Micah Iverson. Coach Kelly Clarkson praised both of her wards but eventually picked Micah Iverson as the winner of the battle. Kelly thinks Micah is an incredible vocalist and expects him to be in the finale for this season of The Voice.

Blake Shelton said that everytime he had it kind of figured out who was winning the battle, Gigi or Micah would have a big moment. He said Gigi hit some soaring notes coupled with incredible pitch. But Micah came back with similar notes. “So it just really went back and forth,” said Blake. But eventually, he picked Gigi as the winner because he didn’t expect it.
John Legend said both were really good and he loved their chemistry together. He said it was a heartfelt performance. When it comes to range, John leaned more on Micah, saying he loves his chest voice and said it was perfect. He said Gigi sounded incredible and have such a clear voice. But based on the performance, John said he probably leaned a little bit toward Micah.
Nick Jonas said it was a tough song to sing. He said both Micah and Gigi are talented, with a lot of potential. But Micah had a bit more confidence and was more sure, so Nick picked Micah as the winner of the battle.
Kelly Clarkson said that Gigi has a brokenness that’s beautiful. “Everything kind of bleeds through your voice which I am so attracted to.” Kelly also loved Micah’s falsetto, saying it gets so passionate that “it almost feels like you’re on the verge of tears.”
It was tough for Kelly to decide since Gigi and Micah have a beautiful chemistry together. But Kelly eventually picked Micah as the winner of the battle. Kelly thinks Micah is an incredible vocalist and is expecting him to be in the finale.
Season 18 of The Voice premiered at 8PM on February 24, 2020 on NBC and it will air Mondays at 8 PM. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Carson Daly returned for his eighteenth season as host.
On the question of whether or not The Voice Season 18 will continue airing amid the coronavirus pandemic, John Legend said that the program have pre-taped shows until the end of April. Whether the three weeks of planned live shows will push through in May is still unknown at this point. John said in his interview with Billboard that everybody’s playing things by ear because no one knows “where the world’s going to be in May.”
