Scott (Pete Davidson) has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. Now in his mid-20s and having achieved little, he starts chasing his dream of becoming a tattoo artist. As his ambitious younger sister (Maude Apatow) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his ER nurse mother (Marisa Tomei). He spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys – Oscar (Ricky Velez), Igor (Moises Arias) and Richie (Lou Wilson) – and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley).
But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.
The King of Staten Island is a bracing comedy film about love, loss and laughter, directed by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), from a screenplay by Apatow, Pete Davidson, and Dave Sirus. On January 29, 2019, it was announced that Universal Pictures was producing a new film directed by Judd Apatow and starring Saturday Night Live breakout Pete Davidson.
Judd Apatow is known for elevating a series of promising young comedy talents to their first major big-screen performance, including Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Amy Schumer and Kumail Nanjiani.
In April 2019, Bel Powley, Bill Burr and Marisa Tomei were added to the cast. Maude Apatow and Pamela Adlon joined the cast in May. The rest of the cast joined in June, 2019.
Principal photography for the film began on June 3, 2019.
The King of Staten Island is produced by Apatow for his Apatow Productions alongside Barry Mendel. Together, the duo shared producing credits on the films The Big Sick and Bridesmaids, as well as This Is 40, Trainwreck, and Funny People. The film’s executive producers are Pete Davidson, Michael Bederman and Judah Miller.
It was scheduled to have its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 13, 2020. However, the festival was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic. The King of Staten Island was then scheduled to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 20, 2020. But, the festival was also postponed due to the pandemic.
Previously scheduled for a theatrical release on June 19, 2020 (also scrapped because of the pandemic), The King of Staten Island is now scheduled to be released through video on demand on June 12, 2020.
