Roberta Battaglia (age 10) from Toronto, Canada performed “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper during the Auditions Round on America’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 15).
In a chat backstage with AGT host Terry Crews, Roberta said she started singing when she was around 3 years old. Her Dad is an engineer at a local radio station and is also a singer. When he performs at restaurants, Roberta would sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” when he leaves the microphone on the floor. “From then on I loved singing and I just learned more songs,” she said.
Roberta said she had always dreamt of being on America’s Got Talent. Before going onstage, she said, “I might only be 10 years old but I have big dreams.”
As she faced the AGT judges, Roberta gushed over seeing Sofia Vergara and said she’s a fan and that she loves watching her on Modern Family. Asked by Sofia what she’ll do if she wins a million dollars, Roberta said she’ll give her dog “Happy” a girlfriend.
Looking pretty nervous and on the brink of tears, Roberta’s talent shone through and shattered everyone’s expectations. Her powerful and stunning rendition earned a standing ovation from the audience and AGT judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara.
Crying onstage after her performance, Roberta shed more tears as the judges heaped praises on her. She also revealed that she was bullied sometimes. Simon Cowell gave the 10-year-old singer some advice on how to respond to bullies, followed by Sofia Vergara who pressed the Golden Buzzer saying, “Let’s see who is going to bully you after this”

“Shallow” is a song performed by American singer Lady Gaga and American actor and filmmaker Bradley Cooper. It is the lead single from the soundtrack of the 2018 musical romantic drama film, A Star Is Born. The song topped the charts in more than twenty countries and has received numerous accolades including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Song. It won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammy Awards.

Heidi Klum exclaimed, “I mean it’s amazing. It’s amazing what you just did.”
Howie Mandel said, “Your talent is unbelievable. Your age is unbelievable. This moment is unbelievable.”
Simon Cowell joked, “That wasn’t you singing, was it? It wasn’t someone behind you?” When Roberta said it was her, Simon continued, “It really was you. You know what, you are so likable, so humble.” Simon said Roberta must have great friends. Roberta says she does but she sometimes gets bullied. Simon advised her, “There’s one way you win over bullies. It’s by being happy and successful. You know that.”
He said bullies always drag down talented people, so in a weird way it’s a complement. “It shows your strength, that you’ve come all the way from Canada to be here. And we are honored to have you as our guest.”
Sofia Vergara said, “It was amazing, it was breathtaking. You’re 10 years old, that’s impossible to sing like that at 10 years old. And you know what, let’s see who is going to bully you after this.” Sofia then pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending Roberta straight to the Live Shows.
America’s Got Talent (AGT) Season 15 premiered in the United States on May 26, 2020, on NBC. For this season, AGT judges are Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, returning Heidi Klum, and newcomer Sofia Vergara.
This season is most notable for its production being affected by the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic in 2020, which impacted audition sessions. The program initially moved to filming without an audience present at auditions, before ultimately suspending production. Auditions were later allowed to continue, but via online applications from those quarantined in their homes.
