The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 is produced by Joshua Zeman and Jonathan Shukat, with Caitlin Colford as co-producer. The documentary is partly funded by a kickstarter campaign. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who reportedly donated $50,000 to also fund this documentary, serves as executive producer along with Adrian Grenier.
The documentary film had its world premiere at the Nantucket Film Festival on June 17, 2021. It was released by Bleecker Street in select US theaters on July 9, 2021, prior to video on demand on July 16, 2021.
