It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2019. It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2020 by StudioCanal. The film was developed by Escape Plan Productions with funding from Film4. In November 2018, it was announced Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle had joined the cast of the film, with Rose Glass directing from her own screenplay. The film was fully financed by Film4 Productions and the British Film Institute.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2019. Shortly after, A24 acquired U.S. and StudioCanal U.K. distribution rights to the film. It also screened at Fantastic Fest on 19 September 2019, and the BFI London Film Festival on 5 October 2019. The film went on to receive a Special Commendation in the Official Competition section of the London Film Festival, with the jury president, Wash Westmoreland, saying “This dazzling directorial debut marks the emergence of a powerful new voice in British cinema.”

Awarding Glass the IWC film bursary, the director Danny Boyle described Saint Maud as “a genuinely unsettling and intriguing film. Striking, affecting and mordantly funny at times, its confidence evokes the ecstasy of films like Carrie, The Exorcist and Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin.”

Morfydd Clark is a Welsh stage and screen actress. She was brought up in Cardiff, Wales but left school when she was 16 after struggling with dyslexia. In 2009 she was accepted into British Youth Music Theatre’s production of ″According to Brian Haw″ and into the National Youth Theatre of Wales, before training at The Drama Centre London. She left in her final term to play the title role in Saunders Lewis’ play Blodeuwedd with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. She has appeared in Violence and Son at the Royal Court, as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, and in Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Donmar Warehouse. She played Frederica Vernon in Whit Stillman’s film Love & Friendship.

Jennifer Ehle is a British-American actress. She won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice. For her work on Broadway, she won the 2000 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for The Real Thing, and the 2007 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Coast of Utopia. She is the daughter of English actress Rosemary Harris and American author John Ehle.
