You is an American psychological thriller TV series developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. The first season is based on the 2014 novel by Caroline Kepnes and follows Joe Goldberg, a New York bookstore manager and serial killer (Penn Badgley) who falls in love with a customer named Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and quickly develops an extreme, toxic and delusional obsession. The series features Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry, and Shay Mitchell in supporting roles.
For its second season, Ambyr Childers was upgraded to a series regular, as were newly cast, Victoria Pedretti, James Scully, Jenna Ortega, and Carmela Zumbado.
“You” premiered on the Lifetime channel on September 9, 2018, in the United States, and streaming on Netflix, internationally, on December 26, 2018. The series attracted a limited audience on Lifetime but became a popular and a critical success for Netflix, with over 40 million viewers, having streamed the first season after its debut on the streaming service.
Lifetime announced that You had been renewed for a second season based on Kepnes’ follow-up novel Hidden Bodies, on July 26, 2018, ahead of the series premiere. On December 3, 2018, it was announced that the series would move to Netflix as a Netflix Original title. The second season was released on December 26, 2019.
The second season follows Goldberg, who is on the run from his sordid past. Upon taking a trip to Los Angeles, he quickly settles in the city with a different persona and finally meets his love match, the chef and health guru, Love Quinn. Joe attempts to forge a new life with the love of his dreams, but will he truly escape from the horrors of his past or will history repeat itself again?
Penn Dayton Badgley (age 33), who plays the role of Joe Goldberg, is an American actor, musician, and a political activist. He is best known for his role as Dan Humphrey in The CW teen drama series Gossip Girl (2007–12) and for his lead role in You. He has also appeared in films, including John Tucker Must Die (2006), The Stepfather (2009), Easy A (2010), Margin Call (2011), and Greetings from Tim Buckley (2012). Badgley is also the lead singer for Brooklyn-based indie band MOTHXR.
