Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!

Great Pretender is an upcoming original Japanese anime television series produced by Wit Studio, directed by Hiro Kaburagi and written by Ryota Kosawa. The series is scheduled to premiere in July 2020 on Fuji TV’s +Ultra anime programming block.
During Anime Expo 2019, Wit Studio revealed that they are producing a new 23-episode original anime television series that is directed by Hiro Kaburagi and written by Ryota Kosawa. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is designing the characters, and Yutaka Yamada is composing the series’ music. It will premiere in Fuji TV’s +Ultra anime programming block and BS Fuji on July 2020. The series will stream exclusively on Netflix.
The official website for GREAT PRETENDER announced the release date of Summer 2020 for its original anime series. Netflix will be exclusively streaming the show worldwide with a Japanese release first.
GREAT PRETENDER is essentially a story about professional con men. They make their rounds all around the world and explore many countries, all the while having dangerous but fun adventures and learning things about themselves. It’s an adventurous story with art, soul, and storytelling that tells of the dedication of the anime team. Hint: it involves Hollywood.
Netflx Anime Updates From Anime Expo: Great Pretender, from WIT Studio and Brand New Animal, from Studio Trigger get greenlit, Carole and Tuesday, from Shinichiro Watanabe(Cowboy Bebop) debuts 1st half on August 30
As part of the alliance of the TV block Ultra+ from Fuji TV(Japan) and Netflix, the block will release two extra anime series for 2020.
The first one is called Great Pretender, from WIT Studio(Attack on Titan). The show will have a theme of “credit fraud” and will be a “happy and comedic drama between worldly famous swindlers.”
The second one comes from Studio Trigger(Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia), and it´s directed by Yoh Yoshinari, being his 2nd production in Trigger after LWA. The series seems to be Zootopia in a neon cyberpunk environment.
It was also announced that Carole and Tuesday, another series from Ultra+ which is still broadcasting in Japan, will drop its first 12 episodes on August 30 on Netflix. This series is about the titular girls, who aim to create music in a future where music is created via technology and corporative dominance, instead of real instruments and passion.
