Jon Courtenay (age 46) sang a highly entertaining original song about his life during the Auditions round on Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14)

An entertainer from Moseley village, Courtenay had always dreamed of performing at the London Palladium, where Britain’s Got Talent auditions are currently held. He said he’s been playing the piano since he was around five and dubbed the Palladium as his “Holy Grail” since it’s where he used to watch shows with his dad. Courtenay described the venue as the home of variety and found it overwhelming and amazing.

With an original song that’s funny and moving at the same time, Courtenay told the story of his life – an entertainer who has been playing 30 years in piano bars and pubs but who had always dreamed of playing piano on BGT, in front of Simon Cowell and his team.

To his sons, Courtenay is the Greatest Showman. But after his sterling performance, Courtenay gained more fans than just his boys.

Courtenay received a standing ovation from all BGT judges and from the audience.

Amanda Holden said Courtenay made her fall to bits while David Walliams said Courtenay made everyone fall in love with him. Simon Cowell said it was a great audition and that he’ll get a great reaction from it. Finally, Ant and Dec made their sentiment known by pressing the Golden Buzzer for Courtenay.

Judges Comments:

Amanda Holden commented, “You’ve made me fall to bits, I don’t know why. I just saw a man who kind of made all his dreams come true.”

David Walliams said, “It was just so winning wasn’t it. I mean, my goodness me and maybe the whole audience and I’m sure everyone watching at home, just fall in love with you.”

Alesha Dixon said, “It had everything and at the end you had us moved to tears. This show is perfect for you and now I want to see you go as far as you can in this competition.”

Simon Cowell said, “It was just a wonderful audition. You are somebody who’s worked for years, needs a break, you’ll get a huge reaction of this I promise you and we all want you to do well. So I would love to be the first to say Yes.”

Suddenly, presenters Ant and Dec emerge from backstage and proceed to press the Golden Buzzer for Jon Courtenay, sending him straight to the semi-finals.

Britain’s Got Talent (aka BGT) is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. It is hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (also known as Ant & Dec), and produced by both Thames (formerly Talkback Thames) and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year. The show premiered on June 9, 2007 following the success of America’s Got Talent the previous year.

Every year, contestants of any age can audition for the contest with whatever talent they wish to demonstrate. Auditionees seek to impress a panel of judges – at present, consisting of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and David Walliams – in order to secure a place in the live rounds of BGT. The winner gets a cash prize and a place within that year’s performances for the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.

On average, Britain’s Got Talent draws 9.9 million viewers per series. A spin-off titled Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions, featuring the same judges and hosts, was later produced and broadcast in 2019, following the success of the American edition’s spin-off America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Britain’s Got Talent is contracted to run until 2024.

Britain’s Got Talent 2020 (Season 14) will air in two parts, the first in April 2020 with pre-recorded audition episodes, while the second containing the live rounds to be aired at a later date. The series was split into two parts because of the Covid-19 pandemic or coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown issued by the British government.
